Hayle Ch'an Retreat

We take Refuge in the Buddha
We take Refuge in the Dharma
We take Refuge in the Sangha
We take Refuge in the Triple Gem within ourselves!
Picture
Venue: Hayle, Cornwall.

A small but dedicated group gathered in Cornwall for a week of Ch’an meditation in the tradition of Master Xu Yun (1840-1959) in April, 2014.  The days began early with light stretching and Taijiquan practice, followed by hours of seated meditation.  In the evening, extended periods of walking across the rural landscape balanced the mind and body.

Pure perception,
At root is beautiful.
Time and space,
Millions of miles. (19.4.14)

Night turns to day,
Sky turns to sand.
Inside and out,
No Difference.  (20.4.14)

Light of Hayle,
Is dark at night.
Cycles repeat,
Varying in the mind only. (20.4.14)

Gongfu training,
Is seated meditation.
Standing up, sitting down,
Inbetween is the essence.  (20.4.14)

Agricultural Ch’an,
Sprouts from the earth.
Root and branch,
Both equally empty. (21.4.14)

Awareness,
Far-reaching and yet near.
No pushing, no pulling.
Force with no origin. (21.4.14)

Quiet wood,
Extended mind.
Bird song,
In the heart!  (22.4.14)

Sun light breaking through,
All is clear.
Darkness and light,
One and the same.  (22.4.14)

Diversity!
Perfection,
Perfection!  (23.4.14)

Birdsong,
Here and there.
Wind blows,
There and here.  (23.4.14)

Spreading out.
Spreading out,
Never moving…  (24.4.14)

The trees can not be seen.   (25.4.14)

Early morning,
Hayle bright light!
Late in the evening,

'Licchavi Vimalakirti came to the foot of that tree and said to me, ’Reverend Sariputra, this is not the way to absorb yourself in contemplation. You should absorb yourself in contemplation so that neither body nor mind appear anywhere in the triple world. You should absorb yourself in contemplation in such a way that you can manifest all ordinary behavior without forsaking cessation. You should absorb yourself in contemplation in such a way that you can manifest the nature of an ordinary person without abandoning your cultivated spiritual nature.'
