Launceston Ch’an Week Retreat 25th July – 1st of August, 2015

Picture
Tamar Ottery /farm - near Bude
Five people and one German Shepherd Dog (Xena) gathered together on a gloriously sunny day to begin a week of intense meditation, and exciting sight-seeing.  We combine deep and profound ‘still’ meditation, with periods of activity which involve travelling and educational visits to important and interesting places.  We do this as a replacement for the need within the Chinese Ch’an tradition to augment seated mediation with working in the fields.  We seek the ‘stillness’ that is not different from ‘movement’, and the ‘movement’ that is not different from ‘stillness’.

Sitting like a stone mountain,
The mind does not move.
The mind expansive like empty-space,
Moving like the wind!

Shi Da Dao – 25.7.15

King Arthur – myth and legend,
Empty mind – form and void.
Empty legends are full of truth,
And the One-mind is beyond mysticism!

Early morning Ch’an,
Wind and rain.
The swifts fly around,
And nothing is not mind.

Holding the brush with no instruction,
The brush moves by itself.
Innocence and purpose,
Are as one undivided whole.

The mind vast and bright,
The wall clean and flat.
Are the two
Related?

Dawn,
The rooster calls.
The night-time passes,
But the One-mind remains.

Upasika Yukyern 28.7.15

Passing through the gate,
The gates passes through us!
Coming and going,
Is just the same!

Walls around the mind,
Prevents spacious awareness.
Penetrate the wall,
And the mind expands without end!

Lay Ch’an practice,
Takes into account all conditions.
All stones are empty,
So why bother turning them over?

The Buddha sat under a tree,
But trees are hard to come by today.
In the empty void,
Where can a tree be found?

Shi Da Dao 31.7.15

Guarding the Dao,
My job is done.
My meditation is constant,
And I have four legs to cross into the void!

This Muntjac Deer has three legs.
And a very kind heart
Through kindness the world is changed,
And the mind has no end in its compassion.

The beautiful deer resides in the heart,
And all is gentle.
When respect prevails,
All is Dharma-compassion!

Upasika Yuk Yern 1.8.15
'Licchavi Vimalakirti came to the foot of that tree and said to me, ’Reverend Sariputra, this is not the way to absorb yourself in contemplation. You should absorb yourself in contemplation so that neither body nor mind appear anywhere in the triple world. You should absorb yourself in contemplation in such a way that you can manifest all ordinary behavior without forsaking cessation. You should absorb yourself in contemplation in such a way that you can manifest the nature of an ordinary person without abandoning your cultivated spiritual nature.'
